It is a type of constrictor snake and is non-venomous.

Physical Features

It is one of the largest snakes on the Australian continent, with an adult reaching up to 6 meters in length. Its colour varies between olive, greenish-brown or reddish-brown with a whitish underpart. In captivity they can live up to 20 years with good care.

Habitat

They are endemic to Australia. They are found in mountain ranges and savannah woodlands. They are generally nocturnal, seeking shelter in rock crevices and hollows during the day. They use trees as roosts.

Diet

Their diet is based on small mammals such as rodents, rabbits, birds and reptiles. They are great hunters and hunt in watercourses.

Reproduction

They are oviparous. Mating takes place between May and July and three months later the female lays around 15 to 40 eggs, which are completely white and spherical in shape. They are laid on land and incubated for 50 days.

Threats

Illegal hunting for pets and the destruction of their natural habitat.

Status and conservation

This species is protected and listed in Appendix II of the CITES.
