Morphological characteristics

The sun parakeet or sun conure is a tropical bird that stands out for its colorful and striking plumage of yellow and orange tones. They measure 17 to 30 cm, with an average weight of 120g. They do not exhibit sexual dimorphism.

Habitat

They originate from South America, ranging from Venezuela and the Guianas to much of Brazil. They inhabit wooded savannas and forests.

Feeding

They feed on all kinds of fruits and small seeds.

Reproduction

These birds usually breed easily both in the wild and in captivity. Pairs mate for life. They lay between 3 and 5 eggs, which incubate for 24 days.

Threats

The population has declined drastically due to the illegal trade in these species.

Status and conservation

Classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
